Nike and Jordan Brand need commendations for their commitment to the marketing gimmick that the Air Jordan 1 was “banned” by the NBA. In reality, the league fined Michael Jordan and Nike for wearing a black-and-red Nike Air Ship, but The Swoosh saw an opportunity to sell rebellion and thus fabricated the story that it was the Jordan 1. This “banned” narrative has even become the central focus for actual colorways on the AJ 1, including the recently released Air Jordan 1 Retro Low OG Banned.
Banned Jordans On Sale
Now only three months removed from its release in May, the Air Jordan 1 Retro Low OG Banned is available for under retail via JD Sports. The shoe was originally released in full-family sizing for $145 (adult), $120 (GS), $80 (PS), and $65 (TD), but JD Sport has slashed prices across the board. You can now scoop up adult pairs for $105, GS for $85, preschool for $55, and toddler for $45. Take even more off with code JDS10.
The shoe retains the iconic bred (black and red) color scheme from the original Air Jordan 1 High, placing black tumbled leather on the mudguard, eyelets, and midfoot panel. Pops of red are used on the box, Swoosh, heel overlay, and the heel tab, the latter of which features a red “X” as an homage to its “banning.”
More details that lean into the banned narrative are found inside the sneaker, with the date “10.18.84” marking the day Jordan received the fine for wearing the Air Ship. On the insole, the speech from the original banned commercial is written above a red X. The left shoe says, “On September 15, 1984, Nike created a revolutionary new basketball shoe,” while the right says “On October 18, 1984, they were thrown out of the game.”
