Michael Jordan began his second three-peat with the Chicago Bulls in 1996. Throughout this run, MJ would debut multiple signature sneakers that to this day are forever tied to Chicago’s NBA Finals victories. Starting off the run was the Air Jordan 11, but one of the most iconic moments in Jordan’s playoff career came in the next sneaker, the Air Jordan 12.
Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the Air Jordan 12 was inspired by women’s fashion, specifically heeled derby shoes, and the Japanese flag. The silhouette incorporated a faux reptile skin mudguard, quilted leather panels, and Jordan logos on the tongue, eyelets, and heel tab. Inside, the shoe features Zoom Air cushioning, a Phylon midsole, and a carbon fiber shank in the midfoot. Original colorways included the Taxi, Flu Game, Playoffs, Cherry, and Obsidian.
That iconic moment was the “Flu Game,” which took place on June 11, 1997. MJ and the Bulls entered Salt Lake City tied 2-2 with the Jazz, and despite suffering from flu-like symptoms, Jordan still played 44 minutes and dropped 38 points in the 90-88 victory. While some have speculated this illness came from staying out late partying, Jordan explained in The Last Dance docuseries how he ate some bad pizza that gave him food poisoning.
The pair of black and red Air Jordan 12s he wore during that game is immortalized forever as one of the most recognizable sneakers to ever release and it ended up on our 12 greatest Air Jordan 12 list. Following the Air Jordan 12’s original run in 1996 and 1997, Jordan Brand would retro the shoe in 2003-04 and 2008-09, and from 2011 onwards, it has become a staple in the release calendar.
If you’re in the market for a pair of Jordan 12s and have questions, we’ve got you covered. Follow along with our Air Jordan 12 Sizing Guide for a breakdown on how the Jordan 12 fits and more.
Different Types of Air Jordan 12s

Jordan Brand first launched the Air Jordan 12 in a mid-top cut, but during its first retro run in 2003, it introduced the Air Jordan 12 Low. This version of the model is exactly as it sounds, cutting the sneaker into a low-top model. It’s not a super common variant of the Air Jordan 12, and it’s primarily seen via another version of the shoe.
We’re talking about the Air Jordan 12 Low Golf. This low-top golf variant was released in 2022, and since then, we’ve seen a handful of OG colorways and a collab with Eastside Golf.
Are Air Jordan 12s Comfortable?

The Air Jordan 12 uses a full-length Zoom Air unit and Phylon foam in the midsole, making it a comfortable shoe to wear both on and off the court. Obviously, with the sneaker dating back 30 years, the AJ 12 lags behind in terms of modern-day shoes, but it still holds up. When it comes to casual wear, you won’t have a problem rocking the sneaker long-term, but maybe don’t go trekking miles. The shoe is also not very breathable since its upper is made of leather.
Do Air Jordan 12s Fit True to Size?

Like most Air Jordan sneakers, the Air Jordan 12 fits true to size. Those with wider feet may benefit from going up half a size, but you should be good to go sticking with your true size.
Air Jordan 12 Fit Tips and Recommendations

Jordan 12s pair well with both shorts and pants, so don’t worry too much about which outfits you’ll be able to wear them with. If you want to loose-lace your Jordan 12, you may want to go down half a size.
Air Jordan 12 Sizing Compared
We’ve compared the Air Jordan 12 to other popular Air Jordan models, check them out below.
Air Jordan 1 vs. Air Jordan 12

While MJ’s first signature sneaker, the Air Jordan 1, isn’t as technologically advanced as the Air Jordan 12, the two sneakers will fit true to size. Inside the AJ 1 sits an Air unit in the heel, though it’s minimal and doesn’t provide much cushion. Compare that to the Zoom Air unit and Phylon foam in the AJ 12. Clearly, the Jordan 12 is the winner in the comfort department.
Air Jordan 4 vs. Air Jordan 12

After the Nike SB retooling of the Air Jordan 4, the sneaker’s fit and feel have improved significantly. Both the Jordan 12 and Jordan 4 are comfortable shoes that fit true to size, with the AJ 4 featuring an exposed Air unit in the heel, Phylon foam, and a padded interior.
Air Jordan 11 vs. Air Jordan 12

The predecessor to the Air Jordan 12, the Air Jordan 11 (which MJ himself says is his favorite), is pretty darn close when it comes to the comfort level. Obviously, the upper features different materials and paneling, so the lockdown is different, but both use a carbon fiber shank in the midfoot, Phylon foam, and Zoom Air cushioning. And don’t worry, both will fit true to size.
Air Jordan 13 vs. Air Jordan 12

Designer Tinker Hatfield looked to the jungle’s fiercest creature, the black panther, for inspiration when creating the Air Jordan 13. The upper can draw some comparison to the AJ 12, though it is still vastly different. What is similar between the two is the fact that they both fit true to size. Inside the AJ 13, like the AJ 12, is a carbon fiber plate, Zoom Air cushioning, and Phylon foam.
