Jordan Brand is already setting its sights on the 2027 NFL season. As the sports world descends upon Los Angeles for Super Bowl LXI, the Jumpman is reportedly prepping a special tribute to the gridiron: the Air Jordan 9 Super Freak. This iteration of the Tinker Hatfield-designed silhouette leans heavily into its sports crossover heritage. With His Airness leaving the hardwood, the AJ 9 famously transitioned to the baseball diamond during MJ’s first retirement while keeping its hoop heritage at heart.
Despite the basketball and baseball influence throughout the model, the Super Freak brings the underrated silhouette to the football field as an homage to Jordan Brand’s first NFL endorser, the legendary Randy Moss of the Minnesota Vikings. In his heyday, Moss brought a wealth of colorways to the gridiron, including a Jordan 13 and a Jordan 9, before getting his own silhouette in the Jumpman Super Freak in 2000. Now, a rendition of that Jordan 9 PE is rushing to store shelves as a nod to the great receiver.
Air Jordan 9 Super Freak details
Early mock-ups reveal a color palette perfectly suited for the host city, echoing the purple and gold of both the Vikings and the hometown Los Angeles Lakers. The pair features a clean white leather base complemented by glossy purple patent leather overlays. Regal gold accents hit the heel pull tabs, branding, and collar, creating an unmistakable L.A.-inspired look. In a notable departure from standard releases, the tongue’s traditional "Air Jordan" text is replaced with golden "Super Freak" embroidery as a nod to Moss’s otherworldly feats. It is currently unknown whether the model will adopt Moss' 84 or the standard 23 on the heel, as on the Phoenix Suns-inspired Jordan 5.
Air Jordan 9 Super Freak Release Info
Initially reported by zSneakerHeadz and Sneaker Files, the Air Jordan 9 Super Freak is currently expected to release on February 13, 2027, touching down during Super Bowl Weekend. Expect these to drop via Nike and select retailers online and in-store. Available in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $215.
