Sneakers with Easter Eggs

Before you start stressing your Easter fits for this weekend, remember to start with the most important component: your kicks. It’s where most people’s eyes will look first if you do it right, and then nothing else matters. Because that linen suit is going to look wrinkly no matter what you do, dog.

But if you don’t have pastel AF1s or a pair of the new Easter-themed Piggy Runner 2.0s, you could always go a layer deeper and hit ‘em with a sneaker that features a hidden feature, otherwise known as an Easter Egg.

Let’s face it, we’ve seen every kind of sneaker under the sun at this point. There isn’t much else that can be done to kicks design-wise, so brands and collaborators have started hiding little secrets into their silhouettes for eagle-eyed fans to find.

From secret stash pockets and tear away hidden layers to built-in tools and alternative functionality, sneakers don’t just have to be sneakers if you use your imagination.

Here are some of our favorite Sneaker Easter Eggs:

Reef Fanning Sandal

Reef Fanning Flip-Flops with the Bottle Opener

Alright, they’re not technically sneakers and you can only wear them to Easter festivities in certain situations, but these are iconic. Reef Fannings peaked in the early-2000s but their ingenuity was mind-bottling at the time. A sandal for beachgoers who always forget their bottle opener at home? Genius. Now, where did I put my beer?

Salehe Bembury’s New Balance 574 Yurt with the Whistle

All of Salehe’s sneaker collaborations have taken what was there and made it something completely different, but maybe none as much as the New Balance 574 Yurt, which turned a fairly base model New Balance prep shoe into a badass hiking sneaker complete with a feature that helps you find friends on the trail or even call your dog. He told Esquire Mag, “The first time I actually brought it up was my first New Balance meeting. I glued a whistle into—I believe it was actually a 574, coincidentally. I told this whole story of hiking and losing your friends and it being almost dark. And then I raised the New Balance to my face and blew it, and everyone’s face in the room dropped.”

South Park x adidas Towelie Campus 80s with the UV Stoned Eyes

South Park has done a lot of collaborations and licensed products, but maybe none more iconic than the Towelie Campus 80s. From the terry cloth finish to the included character keychain, these are must-haves for any fan of the show. But what truly made them legendary was Towelie’s trademark eyes on the tongue of the shoe that would get stoned when the shoes were in sunlight, turning bloodshot when hit by the UV rays. High fashion.

Nike SB Costco Dunks with the Hidden Hot Dogs

After nearly a year of rumors and questions of whether they were actually real or not, Nike SB finally dropped the Dunks at a handful of Costcos earlier this year and people went nuts for the Kirkland specials. While the heather gray cotton sweatshirt allover finish may not have gotten people excited at first glance, it was the details that took this pair over the top. For example, if you take out the Kirkland Signature logo insoles and flip them over, you can find the menu card for the famous Costco Glizzy printed on the Nike Air bag unit underneath. Aside from the hidden hot dog, these limited kicks also came with a Nike SB edition of a Costco membership card and, as we just learned this week, a hidden black suede layer underneath the heather gray that tears away as you skate them. These were truly the gift that keeps on giving.

Chad Muska's Circa Skate Shoes with the Stash Pocket

Chad Muska’s Circa Skate Shoes with the Secret Stash Pocket

A million shoes have had secret stash pockets on the underside of the tongue but maybe none more iconic, or fitting, than Chad Muska’s signature Circas. Yeah, all the marketing material showed skaters using the pocket for cash or their car keys but we know what it was really for and it made these shoes even louder than Salehe’s whistle.

Yeezy 500 Tactical Boots with the Fire Cord Laces

There’s not much subtlety to Ye. You know exactly what you’re getting with the artist formerly known as Kanye West, and he lets you know it. But when Ye and adidas dropped the tactical boot version of the Yeezy 500, they thought you might actually wear these when the world ended and included a very useful function should you be living off the land. The tips of the laces contain fire cords to help you get a fire going should you need to stay warm or if you forgot a lighter for Ye’s SoFi Stadium shows in LA this weekend.

Bad Bunny’s adidas Gazelle Cabo Rojo with the Hidden Message

Benito has had a great run with adidas and breathed new life into a bunch of different silhouettes on his way to nabbing his own signature sneaker, the BadBo 1.0. Before he got his own kicks, he gave a great take on the iconic Gazelle, including a beautiful Cabo Rojo rendition that pays tribute to the pink salt lakes of the region. When you get a pair in-hand, you’ll notice there are two tongues to choose from, one with a co-branded logo and the other with zig-zag blue stitching. Sneaker sleuths figured out that if you unstitch the blue stitching, it reveals a secret message from Bad Bunny himself that reads, “PR ESTA BIEN CABRON” which is a line from his “El Apagón” song and roughly translates to ‘Puerto Rico is the shit.’ So are these shoes.
