The rap game and sneakers have been intertwined for decades, going all the way back to Run-DMC’s co-sign of the adidas Superstar in the ‘80s. Back then, the market wasn’t ready for rapper-designed sneakers, but today, multiple hip-hop megastars have their own sneaker deals and signature models.
J. Cole, as humble as ever, has started taking a different approach to the sneaker game. First teaming up with Puma to launch the RS-Dreamer in 2020 and the RS-Dreamer 2 in 2021, Cole is now set to launch an independent sneaker dubbed the Indie 5000. The latest teaser for Cole’s shoe comes via his new magazine, The Fall-Off, which is currently up for sale on his website.
J. Cole’s The Fall Off Magazine

The 144-page print editorial features stories on the stars of today, like Glorilla, JID, and Larry June, as well as conversations with legendary figures in the space, like Lauryn Hill. There’s also a section dedicated to reviews of rap icons’ debut albums, and of course, a story on Cole himself.
But what really piqued our interest is the newest teaser for the J.Cole Indie 5000. The North Carolina rapper has been working on the model for four years, and in an AMA (ask me anything) on his website, he stated that “They are finished, manufactured, and ready to go.” Shortly after, Cole dropped a video series documenting promotional stunts for his album The Fall-Off, in which the Indie 5000 was clearly visible. We also saw him rock his signature sneaker during a short stint playing professional basketball in China.
The two full-page ads for the Indie 5000 showcase drawings of the sneaker, with both directing the reader to dreamerinc.com. Here, you can sign up for updates on J. Cole’s Indie 5000 sneaker. We also have a breakdown of some of the design details on the shoe, thanks to a mock-up sketch in one of the ads, showing us the upper features premium leather, embroidered details, TPU-injected logos and more.
When Does J. Cole’s Indie 5000 Release?
The Fall-Off magazine doesn’t give us any clear release details for J. Cole’s Indie 5000, but with the website now active and users able to sign-up for updates, it’s likely sooner rather than later. We’ll be keeping our eyes on the site and will alert you when J. Cole drops the Indie 5000 sneaker via the Sole Retriever mobile app.
