While Nike has always been associated with the sport of running, they’ve been struggling to maintain market share in the 2020s. The advent of specialty running labels like Hoka and On, as well as a revitalization of brands like Brooks, has caused Nike to lose traction in the running world, but they’re on a mission to make up ground. If you haven’t noticed already, Nike’s running division is making a big push to work with smaller, local shops, increase its presence in specialty shops, and become more integrated into the running community. With this in the background, Nike is still pushing forward with innovative silhouettes, teasing the next generation of Nike running shoes.
In its latest press release, Nike mentions that the running division has had multiple developmental prototypes approved by World Athletics, the governing body over sports like running and track and field. Although the release shows blacked-out teasers of the upcoming Nike Alphafly 4, alongside pictures of athletes like Faith Kipyegon, Mary Ngugi-Cooper, Grant Fisher, and Charles Hicks rocking the silhouette, detailed photos of the Alphafly 4 are available thanks to World Athletics.
This blacked-out sample version of the Alphafly 4 makes a radical change by removing the exposed Zoom Air unit, though it’s possible Nike has just repositioned it to the internals of the shoe. A thick foam midsole doesn’t display any branding for a specific foam compound, but it’s likely ZoomX. The upper is also more lightweight compared to the Alphafly 3, while the outsole geometry is also tweaked.

The Alphafly 3 was an industry-leading super shoe for some time, but it’s been over two years since its debut in January 2024. Competitors have released lighter super shoes since then, with the Alphafly 3 being one of the heaviest currently available. It’s due for an update, so with this latest version, we should see higher energy return thanks to a larger stack height and tweaked foam compounds, plus a lighter build.
Expect to see more of the Nike Alphafly 4 and other upcoming Nike Running silhouettes at race events over the coming months. Nike is also going to continue its push into the specialty running market with partnerships and integrations in local communities, so don’t be surprised if your local run club or specialty store begins to focus on Nike.
