With the NBA set to vote on two potential expansion teams, one in Las Vegas and the other in Seattle, some tinfoil hat theories have hit the ‘net. Some think that, since Kevin Durant’s contract expires in two years and the new expansion team in Seattle is possibly getting the green light for 2028, he could return to the city where he began his illustrious NBA career as a start to his retirement tour. Well… that’s all just internet conspiracy theories at the moment, but we do have some concrete news on Durant. The Slim Reaper and Nike have just unveiled the next chapter in his long-running line of signature sneakers, the Nike KD 19.
As we’ve seen with the last handful of Nike KD sneakers, this new KD 19 takes a radical leap from its predecessor. Where the KD 18 took inspo from a DMV-area classic, the Air Terra Humara, the 19 seemingly is inspired by Y2K-era Nike basketball models like the Zoom Hyperflight.
This is quite clear with the red colorway that Durant wore on the court to debut the sneaker, as the engineered TPU upper is done entirely in a shiny patent finish. To construct the upper, Nike employs a dual-injection process, the first creating the molding for heel and midfoot lockdown, and the second helping create the dagger shape of the sneaker. Why a dagger? Durant’s Slim Reaper nickname, of course. Inside sits a multi-layer cushioning system containing full-length Zoom Strobel and Cushlon 3.0 foam as well as a midfoot shank for stability.
“Across basketball, few players are as smooth or as dangerous from anywhere on the court as Kevin Durant,” says Ross Klein, VP, Creative Director, Nike Basketball. “The KD19 embodies that edge: visually distinct, built for instant responsiveness and all-game comfort, helping players get to any spot and knock down any shot."
The Nike KD 19 will debut on June 13, 2026 via Nike SNKRS, with a global launch four days later on June 17. Retail is set at $155.
