PJ Tucker's Greatest Sneaker Moments

The day that the sneaker community feared has come to pass: P.J. Tucker is officially retiring from the NBA after a 19-year career that took him from Toronto to Europe to back to the NBA and beyond. Tucker’s list of accomplishments includes championships in Europe and in the NBA, the respect of his peers across the league as a valuable role player who can deliver on both sides of the court that doesn’t always reflect on the stat sheet, and a handful of contracts that were commensurate with his talents and production.

Ok, the part about the sneaker community missing him is a lie. It’s not like P.J. retiring means he will no longer be a featured player on our timelines. The actual group of people who will miss Tucker is the sneaker media. Why? Because he made our jobs very easy for over a decade. Whether he was doing tunnel walks, warming up before gametime, or actually popping up on the court, Tucker was a one-man sneaker content machine.

In one night, he could be good for as many as three different social media hits. And that’s not even counting the IG stories of his teammates expressing concerns about locker room space from all of the sneakers around his spot. People made jokes about P.J.’s on-court production during the last few years of his career, but not once did he ever make us worry about his on-foot production.

We have a feeling that retirement is not going to slow P.J. down in the slightest. The Better Generation, a Houston-based boutique he owns, will be dropping a Nike GT Future collaboration later this summer. With hoopers and sneakerheads still hot for new colorways of the Nike Kobe 6 Protro, it would not be shocking to see his multi-sneaker Journey Pack, which detailed his many stops around the world, make a retail drop. As more and more players who rose to fame during the social media hang up their sneakers, P.J.’s second act as a collaborator has the chance to be even more influential. But before we look to the future, let’s step back and explore his journey from basketball nomad to Sneaker King.

Lowkey Texas Sneaker Legend (2004-2006)

PJ Tucker at Texas

Just to prove that P.J. Tucker has always been about this sneaker life, here is an abridged list of the sneakers he wore during his three-year run at Texas:

Air Jordan 12 Nubuck (aka Black/University Blue), Air Jordan 18.5 Black/Chrome, Nike Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 Texas PE, Nike Zoom LeBron 3 Home, Nike Air Penny 4 Home, Air Jordan 14 Black Toe, Air Jordan 3 White Cement, Air Jordan 10 Steel, Nike Kobe 1 All-Star, etc.

In an era when athletes still mostly abided by the rule that sneakers needed to match the colors of the uniforms, Tucker was already starting to test how far he could take it with sneakers like the Air Jordan 12 and Nike Air Penny 4 that had subtle hits of blue. In 2026, Tucker’s college rotation might not impress jaded sneakerheads who have only ever known athletes to be able to wear what they want whenever they want, but it was certainly novel back then.

Cup of Coffee in the Big Time (2006)

PJ Tucker's rookie season

Tucker played 17 games for the Toronto Raptors in his rookie season before being sent to the D-League and eventually out of the NBA for five years. That would explain why I had no idea who he was when I pulled his 2006-07 Bowman Sterling Rookie Autograph card from a pack. Tucker barely had time to make an impression with his sneakers as they were limited to a white-on-white Nike Air Force 1 that he wore during the NBA Rookie Photoshoot and the yet-to-retro Nike Air Zoom Huarache 64.

Becoming the Man in Europe (2007-2012)

PJ Tucker in Europe

In hindsight, P.J. being let go by the Raptors in March 2007 was a blessing in disguise. His journey through various European leagues gave him the chance to take on a bigger role and to develop the skills that would make him a valuable positionless defensive specialist when he returned to the league in 2012. P.J.’s accolades in Europe included league championships, All-Star, and MVPs in Israel, Ukraine, and Germany. Some of the sneakers he wore during this time include the Nike Hyperize, the Air Jordan 3 Cool Grey, and various Nike Kobe 8s.

Returns to the NBA (2012)

PJ Tucker returns to the NBA

After five seasons of bouncing between Europe and NBA Summer League teams (he had stints with Cleveland, Memphis, and back with Toronto), P.J. Tucker signed a two-year deal with the Phoenix Suns after a strong showing with their Summer League team. It was not a celebrated return by any definition, but Tucker made the most of his minutes whenever he was on the court as he was a super substitute at any spot. His signing came at the perfect time as teams were slowly starting to adopt a more positionless philosophy, so someone like P.J. could guard centers, guards, and everything in between seamlessly.

As someone who recapped what NBA players wore every night for the various websites I used to write for, this was the era when I started to notice P.J.’s sneaker game. He wore the Nike Air Penny 5 in the Phoenix Suns colorway for his NBA re-debut, but he would also show out in the Nike Air CB 34, and the NIKEiD KD 4 and KD 5 in Suns colors. By the second half of the season, Nike was already starting to take notice of Tucker as a sneaker person of interest, and they began sending him player exclusives for the Nike Air Max Hyperposite.

Sneaker Media Crowns P.J. the Sneaker King (2014)

PJ Tucker as the Sneaker King

By the 2014-2015 NBA season, it was clear that P.J. Tucker was going to parlay his large sneaker collection into opportunities that would not be available to a solid but unspectacular role player known for his defense. What other player with Tucker’s humble career averages gets features in outlets like GQ, The Wall Street Journal, and Sports Illustrated?

All of those viral videos of sneakers cluttering not only P.J.’s locker room but his neighboring teammates and exhausted equipment managers were not carefully curated PR hits for P.J., it just looked that way. Those clips provided reporters with plenty of sneaker-related questions to ask in a way that people don’t get from a LeBron or a KD or a Steph. It made him super relatable to the sneaker-centric outlets, which made him an easy choice for Sneakerhead of the Year.

P.J. Impresses Michael Jordan (2016)

Michael Jordan notices PJ Tucker's Air Jordan 5 Shawn Marion PE

During a 2016 game against the Charlotte Hornets, Michael Jordan called out to P.J. Tucker while he was on the court. It wasn’t to distract him or to even troll him; it was to ask him where he got his Air Jordan 5 Shawn Marion player exclusives in Phoenix Suns colors. That simple query probably made P.J. Tucker’s entire year. Imagine having a sneaker game so strong that the guy who is most responsible for the sneaker game is asking you where you got a sneaker with his name, image, and likeness on it. If anybody should be a little freaked out, it’s Shawn Marion. It doesn’t seem likely that Marion directly sold his PEs to P.J., but it would not be shocking to hear that The Matrix got a sternly worded text or voicemail about the sneakers all these years later, either from MJ or someone in the inner circle, just to remind him not to let his PEs out of his sight.

Rocking the Nike Air Yeezy 2 Cheetah Sample (2019)

PJ Tucker in his rich sneakerhead phase

When people look back at P.J. Tucker’s sneaker career (trust me, we will be talking about his epic sneaker run for years to come), many will point to the moment that he revealed that he not only had one of only three pairs of the Nike Air Yeezy 2 Cheetah sample in existence, but he actually wore them to a Kith fashion show. It’s a surefire top-five P.J. sneaker moment, and you could make the argument it’s not five or four or three. All we know is that P.J.’s “guy” who had the sneaker is based in Los Angeles, so that narrows it down to a few thousand influencers, resale shop owners, YouTubers, and LeBron James. Hmmm…

As an aside, here’s P.J.’s Top Five Richest Sneaker Moments:

  • Wears Shoe Surgeon-designed Air Jordan 1 custom for Game 6 of the 2021 NBA Finals with diamond swoosh valued at $250,000
  • Revealing his Nike Air Yeezy 2 Cheetah sample
  • Wearing Carhartt x Eminem x Air Jordan 4 and the Air Jordan 4 Eminem PE in-game
  • Wearing Air Jordan 4 Wahlburgers and Cactus Jack x Air Jordan 4 Friends and Family in-game
  • Wearing Nike Air Yeezy 1 Blink and Nike Air Yeezy 2 Solar Red in-game

Shoe Wars (2020)

PJ vs DeMar

Former Raptors teammates P.J. Tucker and DeMar DeRozan have probably had more arguments about sneakers than the world will ever know. On one side is Tucker with a collection that is the envy of any sneakerhead. On the flipside is DeRozan with a collection that is likely a little less prolific than Tucker’s. However, DeMar’s advantage comes from having the deepest roster of Nike Kobe player exclusives that includes one-of-ones that even P.J. has never seen.

It’s the age-old argument of who is better: the collector whose finds are there for the world to see and enjoy or the athlete signed to the brand who has one-of-a-kind heat that is kept in the vault like a rare vintage wine, with the seal only to be broken in extraordinary circumstances. The 2020 version of this argument ended up on social media and got people hyped that a Verzuz-style battle might commence between the two. Six years later, the world is still waiting.

Booker Tests P.J., P.J. Tests Giannis (2021)

Booker teases PJ, PJ teases Giannis

Just like DeMar DeRozan, former teammate Devin Booker loves to tease P.J. Tucker about sneakers that he may or may not have. One example took place during the 2021 NBA Finals when Booker debuted a never-before-seen UNDFTD x Nike Kobe 4 Protro PE with tie-dye detailing. When Bleacher Report featured the sneakers on their socials, Booker made a point to mention that he had not seen P.J. with a pair of his own. Taking it as a challenge, Tucker secured a pair for himself a few months later. In Booker’s eyes, that was a victory for him because he had Tucker scrambling to get a pair.

The playful teasing did not affect their friendship in a negative way as evidenced by Tucker frequently debuting new exclusive colorways of Booker's debut signature shoe, the Nike Book 1. But while Booker and P.J. are clearly sneaker homeys, Giannis Antetokounmpo is more dumbfounded by P.J.’s sneaker superpowers. During the Milwaukee Bucks’ championship run in 2021, Giannis was in a constant state of confusion as to how P.J. managed to not only debut the Nike Zoom Freak 3 but also show him a colorway that he had not yet seen. P.J. just seems to have that kind of effect on people.

Carmelo Anthony Asks P.J. Tucker for his Sneakers Back on a Wine Livestream (2021)

Artist rendition of what may have happened when PJ acquired Melo's rare PEs.

That title is not a game of sneaker mad libs. Prior to launching 7PM In Brooklyn, Carmelo Anthony hosted a podcast called What’s In Your Glass that featured athletes, entertainers, and media figures sharing stories about their love for wine. During an episode featuring P.J., NFL Hall of Famer and fellow Jordan Brand athlete Charles Woodson, and now-Atlanta Hawks guard (but not Jordan Brand athlete) CJ McCollum, Anthony snuck in a demand from P.J. to return his Air Jordan 5 Puerto Rico Football Club exclusives.

A few weeks prior, Tucker wore the ultra-rare sneakers during a tunnel walk, leading ‘Melo to wonder on social media how that was even possible. Reportedly, they were only made for Anthony and members of the team, so the most likely culprit is someone on PRFC who made a deal with P.J. or the sneakers were already in the hands of a middleman. Regardless of how Tucker made it happen, the biggest takeaway is that he did make it happen.
