The first game of the 2026 NBA Finals was great to watch. Well… maybe not if you’re a fan of the Spurs, who ended up on the losing side of a back-and-forth game. Jalen Brunson of the Knicks exited the game with a knee injury and quickly returned, later suffering an ankle injury, but that didn’t stop him from dropping 30 points in the victory. For the Spurs, their leader Victor Wembanyama had a solid outing with 26 points and 12 rebounds, but that ultimately didn’t make much of an impact on a Knicks squad that was securing second-chance points galore.
While we’d love to break down the first game and the storylines going into game two, we’re a sneaker blog, and we have some breaking sneaker news to report. According to Sham Charania, Victor Wembanyama’s sneaker deal with Nike is set to expire in October 2026, making him a sneaker free agent if he doesn’t agree to an extension with The Swoosh.
Victor Wembanyama’s Sneaker Deal with Nike

Nike first signed Victor Wembanyama while he was playing in France in 2022, and ahead of the 2023 NBA Draft, Wemby and Nike extended their deal for three years. On draft night, Wemby was selected first overall by the San Antonio Spurs.
Since entering the league, Wemby has headlined the Nike Greater Than (GT) series of performance basketball shoes. While he’s preferred the big-man-oriented GT Run line, which has since been renamed the GT Hustle, he’s also received PEs on the GT Cut 4. Nike officially unveiled Wemby’s alien signature logo in April 2024, and on one of his more recent PEs, debuted a new VW logo.

Across the GT Hustle 2 and 3, there have been six pairs that have been released to the public and many more that were exclusive to Wemby. Some pairs that hit shelves include the GT Hustle 3 Halloween, GT Hustle 3 All-Star, GT Hustle 2 Alien, and the GT Hustle 3 Christmas. Victor was also spotted with a Wookie-inspired GT Hustle 3 that celebrated his Rookie of the Year win and an alien cow abduction GT Hustle 3.
More recently, Wemby’s PEs have been focused on the GT Cut 4, though he still wears the GT Hustle 3 in-game. This includes the GT Cut 4 All-Star Warning Label and the recently released GT Cut 4 Gold Panther.
Wemby’s Potential Moves Going Forward
At just 22 years old, Wemby already has an accolade list that many in the league have never achieved. Rookie of the Year, Eastern Conference Finals MVP, and an NBA Finals appearance. He’s got a high ceiling and a bright future ahead of him, not only because of his own level of play but also because of where the San Antonio Spurs are headed as a franchise. He’ll have plenty of negotiating power when it comes to his sneaker deal.
Staying with Nike

Wemby could stick with Nike and, in the next few years, develop his own signature sneaker. The Nike Basketball roster will see two of its biggest stars, LeBron James and Kevin Durant, retire in the coming years, leaving Ja Morant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Devin Booker to lead the charge. Wembanyama would be a great addition to this list to join Cade Cunningham as Nike’s next-up, and in all honesty, he could even surpass Ja Morant as the main attraction at Nike Basketball.
Signing with Another Brand
However, it’s not always the best move to stick with what you’re familiar with. Wembanyama could take a smaller contract from another brand and have more control over his brand, a la Curry Brand. Steph left his deal with Under Armour, which included the ability to sign athletes under the label, for even more creative control and freedom over at Li-Ning.
Now we have to say, Wembanyama isn’t at the same level as Steph Curry, and it’s unknown how well Wemby’s name would translate to a signature sneaker line. Historically, big men in the NBA have struggled to maintain a popular sneaker line, but maybe Wemby is the exception.
Exploring Sneaker Free Agency
We just mentioned Steph Curry’s creative control of Curry Brand being something that Victor Wembanyama could mimic, but he could also take a note out of Curry’s playbook when it comes to staying a sneaker free agent.
Steph ditched his UA deal and explored sneaker free agency for seven months, basically the majority of the 2025-26 NBA season. He was injured for a large chunk of the year, so he only played 35 games as a free agent, but others, like Kobe Bryant, have played full seasons without a sneaker deal.
If Wemby felt so inclined, he could enter the 2026-27 NBA season as a free agent and play 82 games without a sponsor. That would allow him to field offers from across the industry and test out new sneakers he’s never played in before. It’s a pretty smart move, especially considering how Wemby isn’t super reluctant to be signed to brand deals. Wemby’s agent recently stated that he refuses to do soda endorsements, so we know that money alone will not get Victor to stand behind a brand.
What’s Next for Nike and Wemby
Nike and Victor Wembanyama are likely in the midst of negotiations for an extension on their sneaker deal, but no one knows if he will sign on the dotted line before the season starts.
