The sneaker retail space has, unfortunately, been shrinking. Multiple pillars of the community have closed in the last few years, some shuttering storefronts to focus on online business or move out of the country. Others have it worse and completely cease operations. The latter is the case for one of Atlanta’s most well-known sneaker boutiques, Wish ATL, which has announced it will cease operations at the end of the year.
Wish ATL’s Closing
After 22 years in business, Wish ATL is expected to close its doors on December 28, 2026. Founder Lauren Amos wrote a heartfelt message that was posted to Wish’s Instagram page.
“For more than two decades, Wish has been more than a store. It has been a place where fashion, art, and culture intersect. A place where people gathered, discovered new designers and forms of expression, and above all found community and inspiration,” said Amos. “To every customer who walked through our doors in Little Five Points, every artist who trusted us, and everyone who dreamed alongside us - thank you. You are the legacy of Wish.”
Sneaker Retail Spaces
Wish ATL’s closing is just one of many storefronts and legacy retailers that have folded in recent years. EastBay shuttered in 2022, and in the following years, we saw European outlets like Hanon and wellgosh cease to exist. In the US, atmos exited the market and focused on Asia, while The Whitaker Group closed Prosper. Not only has this hit more niche boutiques, but big players like Foot Locker, which announced in 2023 that they would close 400 mall locations by 2026.
Hopefully, Wish ATL can take the same route as Sneakersnstuff, which, after announcing bankruptcy, found new ownership who have brought the business back.
