The first ever professional model skate shoe, the Vans Half Cab launched in 1989. Named after Steve Caballero, the sneakers mark the moment Vans took a serious lean into the skateboarding world. As with most Vans models, the sneakers have transcended its skateboarding roots, landing on runways, movie screens, and art museums. The story of the Vans Half Cab aligns with the story of skateboarding going from niche, subcultural sport to global phenomenon.
The Vans Half Cab is a mid cut sneaker with heavy padding around the ankles to support the skater. Prior to the release, skaters would cut high top sneakers down to custom fit for the sport and early adopters of the style would duct tape the raw exposed collar to keep the sneaker from falling apart. The Half Cab solved this problem while adding that famous vulcanized rubber midsole that Vans is known for. The sneaker is finished with a friction heavy suede upper and waffle patterned outsole.
Everywhere you see a skateboard, you'll find the Vans Half Cab nearby. Vans' website and stores have ample stock of the sneakers as do most large retailers that carry Vans sneakers like CCS and Zumiez. Local skate shops and small sneaker boutiques carry the sneakers as well and should always be your first stop for in-person pick-ups.
Staying true to Vans' design language, the Half Cab traditionally only came in a handful of colors: black, red, and blue. Over the years, the sneakers have adopted various colors and materials as it has transitioned into the lifestyle side of sneaker culture. These days, the sneakers can be found in a vibrant array of colorways.
Like most Vans, these sneakers fit true-to-size. We recommend replacement insoles and inserts for wearers that have a higher arch in their step and do not intend to use the sneaker for skateboarding.
General release pairs of the Vans Half Cab restock frequently. Vans stores and the website keep a hefty stock of the traditional pairs and classics as do larger retailers. Smaller boutiques that stock rarer pairs usually sell through stock fast and only restock on special occasions. For updates on all Vans Half Cab restocks, stay tuned to the Sole Retriever app.

Local Hong Kong-based skate shop VICTORIA is bringing the unique cultural aspects of the city to the world through their Vans Half Cab collaboration. It's impossible to mention Vans collabs without mentioning Supreme. The two go hand in hand at this point. What's not highlighted enough are the smaller up-and-coming collaborators from the skate world like Montreal's Dime and Baltimore's Carpet keeping the Half Cab true to its roots while JJJJound, Parra, and Better With Age transform the sneakers into masterpieces. Even Bruce Lee has his own pair of the kicks, solidifying them in the pantheon of perfect collaborative models.
